  • Thunderbird to be localized in Hindi soon ...watch out for more.

firefoxinhindi is the localization of Firefox in India's national language, Hindi.   FirefoxInHindi is available now! Go to Installation section to know more.

Motivation to develop Firefox in Hindi:

The huge Indian non-English speaking population will be able to use the Mozilla Firefox browser on providing localization support for Hindi. There already exists Hindi localization of the Mozilla browser (Mozilla Hindi). Before this project was initialized an attempt was made to ensure there was no duplication of efforts. There were a few similar projects initiated but the final products were not found anywhere on the web.

This project is being implemented by Payal Chakravarty as a part of Google's Summer Of Code 2005 under the mentorship of Gervase Markham of Mozilla Foundation.

How to localize Mozilla Firefox:

Simple and straightforward instructions are given here

To input in Hindi there are two options:

1.Use the Hindi keyboard (Information to set up the visual keyboard on a Windows machine can be found here.)
2.Use any Unicode editor that supports the Devanagari script. This is easier for beginners since here the Hindi Phonetic keyboard is used and there is no need to remember the keyboard-map.

For this project Baraha was used

Localization in Hindi:

Hindi is written in Devanagari script. The Devanagari script alphabets are encoded in Unicode which is supported by most systems today. The unicode encodings for Devanagari characters can be found here

Some standard transliteration rules for Devanagari can be found here.
